How to Ride Together Despite Varying Abilities
So much good cycling know-how comes from our own differing experiences as cyclists. Which is why I’m turning to you today for your additional input on a question we received recently from Premium Member Rob Holmes.
Rob took advantage of the Ask RBR a Question Premium perk – in which we’re happy to reply directly to any Premium Member’s question. I gave Rob my best advice, and Coach Fred added a bit more. But this is an issue that I know just about every roadie faces from time to time, so I’m pretty well certain that many of our readers have something helpful to add based on their own experience. If so, please chime in on our Comments page. I’ll gather up the best of the responses and report back next week.
Here’s What Rob Wrote:
“Although I haven't been a roadie for long, I came on pretty quick due to a good fitness base, talking with others, reading and, of course, riding (solo and some small group rides). Part of the fun of cycling for me is the community. I've asked several of my friends -- some who have really nice bikes and I know like to ride -- if they would like to go out sometime.
“What I've heard a number of times is, "Oh, I'd like to but I don't want to hold you back" or "I can't hang with you and those guys; I'd get dropped." I assure them that we will ride at their pace and ability. Like most others (I think), I would never invite a friend to ride and leave them or push them beyond their ability, and I would be very conscious to not show off or show up. So my question is how to ease these riders’ concerns and lack of confidence (assuming that they’re not just making excuses).”
Here’s My Reply to Rob
Rob,
Great question. I've copied Coach Fred on this, to get his take, and I'll add a couple thoughts of my own.
I've ridden for about 10 years with a group of guys from my area (a handful live in my neighborhood; others live nearby -- we're all buddies). We all have different experience levels and have ridden with varying levels of "seriousness" during this time.
That means some of us are stronger than others. But when we ride together, we always wait for anybody who falls off the back -- and even if some of us go a little harder at times, we don't do so ALL the time, so that everybody sticks together for the majority of the ride. (And, if the slower guys know that you're going to push it now and then, I think they actually feel better -- they don't feel that they're "holding you back" for the entire ride.)
At other times, the less-strong guys self-select an alternate, less hard, route as part of the same ride. They'll start with the other guys, then turn off and do fewer miles, etc. Again, that gives us all the chance to ride together, and for each "sub-group" to train with our desired intensity and course.
On the flip side of this is another local group we know of. Their m.o. is "all out, all the time." They pretty much do not wait for anyone in their group -- so, of course, no one even a bit less strong wants to ride with them.
The key, I think, is agreeing up front to a "ride plan" (we'll wait at so-and-so spot, or at the top of each climb, etc.), and sticking to it. Once the guys get comfortable with that, they'll be more willing to ride together (hopefully!).
Best,
John
And Here’s What Coach Fred Added
I can't really add much to what John has said. Keeping a group of riders with varying abilities together is difficult, at best. I've coached at cycling camps quite a bit, and it's always a problem. We want to work on pacelines or other techniques, but herding a group of riders on open highways isn't easy and can be dangerous.
So it's best to either designate several groups based on ability or to let a larger group self-select on the road. The latter only works if everyone knows that that's the plan and doesn't get upset when faster riders vanish up the road.

OK, now I’m turning it over to you, dear readers. I’m certain that Rob, and anyone facing this issue will benefit from your additional thoughts and comments. Again, I’ll gather and share them next week. Thanks in advance!

Everything is possible!!!
