1992 Special Order

Special Order

This 22-inch frame was a special order made for a customer who wanted something out of the ordinary. The lug set and triangle design are unique. The half-curly half-Hellenic was never tried again. The components are mixed, Campag, Shimano, Cinelli, and TA. The color scheme is metallic red with teal panels.

Post script: the bike has since changed hands and the new owner outfitted it with a Campag Athena groupset. Fotos below courtesy of the current owner.

Magnum Opus de luxe
Leeds, 1993

This Magnum Opus Mk iii was made in 1993 by Danny Foster (Jackson Cycles, Leeds) and features Reynolds 753 tubes. The components are Campag Record with Selle Italia saddle. The color scheme is black enamel with red panels and bands.

1993 Novus Ductor

The Novus Ductor was introduced by Alf in his first and only catalog of 1985. This one is set up as a touring machine, with mud guards, cantilever brakes, panniers, and triple chain set. The color scheme is Oxford and Cambridge blue.

1993 Mixte

Not many lady's Hetchins were made in total, and only three were made with vibrant stays. The lady's model is known as the Mixte, which refers to the extra stays running diagonally from the dropouts to the head tube. This one was made in about 1993, and is one of the last Hetchins made at Jackson Cycles. A second of the three vibrant Mixtes is also featured at this site.

The bike is originally equiped as follows: Stronglight triple crankset, Deore XT rear gear changer and Campag front changer, Weinmann brakes, and Campag headset bearing.

Of special interest are: the pump with matching paint and transfers; and the bottom-pull rear brake arrangement. It requires reversed cable tensioner and mounting hardware, as the cable comes from beneath.

Hellenic Show Bike
1994

This frame was made specifically for a show in 1994 to test the market for a Hellenic comeback design. Little interest was shown, so the design did not go into production.

The color scheme is blue flam, with 2/3 chrome on the fork and chain stays.

The components consist of Stronglight crank set, Shimano pedals, mechs, and brakes.

The MO iii Anniversary model was offered in a limited edition in 1994 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the patent on the curly stays. It featured extra ornaments (for example on the seat lug) and lots of chrome. This exemplar is David Miller's.

The components are mixed: Campag, Shimano, TA. As can be seen from the fotos, the bike is outfitted for touring and is well-used.

The components are retro Campag. Note especially the custom chain ring and engraved stem.

Italias are known from the 1960s and 1970s, but never appeared in any catalog. David Miller made a few in the 1990s. This one is set up as a touring machine, with mud guards, cantilever brakes, paniers, triple chain set, and long-cage mech, Brooks saddle. The color scheme is British Racing Green.

HETCHINS BATES Hybrid

What do you get if you cross a Hetchins with a Bates? This is not a trick question. In fact, you get a Hetchins with Cantiflex tubes and a Diadrant fork. Such frames exist--see below.

You can call it a Batchins or a Hates or a Hetchbat, as you please. (You may remember that the bat was Bates' symbol.) Very few were made, only as special orders. The tubes were acquired from Peter Bates; the lugs are Novus Doctor. The components include a complete Campag Record group set with Tectro brakes. It was ordered in December 1996 and delivered in March 1997.

1999 Mixte

The bike is equipped with mixed Shimano 105 and 500 components. The rear brake is mounted conventionally on the middle strut, unlike the earlier Mixte which required special bottom-pull mounting hardware.

MILLENNIUM HETCHINS

For the year 2000, a special limited edition Hetchins was produced, the Magnum Opus Millennium. Only 15 units were made, and all were sold before they were made. Most went to customers in the USA. They bear serial numbers starting at "2000". Featured here are frame numbers 2000 (light blue), and 2002 (dark blue) which was actually the prototype frame presented to prospective customers in 1999.

End To End Charity Ride, 2006

Subject: Charity Ride to raise money for breast cancer research
Location: Land's End to John O'Groats



Tony and Stuart MacIntyre, with a combined age of 135 years, cycled to raise money for breast cancer research. Their sister lost an eight-year struggle to the disease a few years ago. The Land's End to John O'Groats tour is a well-known charity route. The trip covered approximately 840 miles. They did it in stages, followed by their brother-in-law with a caravan.

Tony and Stuart ride matched MO iii deluxes.

2005 Earls Court Two

Hetchins reprises a 1948 show model in classic style with fully modern specs. It features hand-cut lugs and full silver-solder. Frame tubes are 531c. The size is 58 cm, angles are 73 degrees head, 72 degrees seat. The color scheme is black metallic with red metallic head tube, silver double-box lining, chromed embelishments.

Components include a 2005-series Campag Record group: carbon CT crank set, mid-length carbon rear mech, 10sp. block, Ergopower carbon levers, dual-pivot front brake and middle-pivot rear brake (Campag discontinued dual-pivots at the rear a few years ago because they thought we couldn't handle so much braking power), Record titanium seat pin, toe-clip-and-strap style Record (PD-02RE) pedals (I never liked clickies); Brooks Classic Swallow saddle with ti frame; Mavic Ksyrium SSC wheels; tires are Pariba gray slicks; Cinelli handlebar with gray cork tape. The weight is 9.6 kg.
