John Liffen writes: "It was purchased new by my father in 1935 and used by him virtually daily until about 1960. Later he dismantled and stored it, and it was not rebuilt until after his death. I rediscovered my interest in cycling and David Pinkerton did the work in 1995-6."

This is the second-oldest frame known to have survived; it was built on 5 November 1935 and sold to a dealer in December. The bike was purchased by the present owner's father in June 1936; he used it daily for many years in his work as a travelling insurance salesman. The present owner had it renovated. Components are mostly 1950s vintage and include GB Coureur brakes, levers, and stem; Airlight hubs; Chater Lea head clip; Williams crank with modern pedals; 700c tires and rims; 5sp. Sturmey Archer hub gear.

This 21-inch frame was built in August 1937. The frame was recently re-sprayed in London, then sold to an American collector who did the transfers and lining. Typical for the period is the fully chromed head stock; the dt transfer (block letters) is a modern reproduction.

Components are: Chater Lea head clip, 2-arm crank and 48T chain ring, pedals (Tommy Bar); Dunlop LW 26-inch steel rims; Bayliss Wiley front hub, 2sp. Sturmey Archer TF hub gear; Brooks B17 narrow saddle; aluminum seat pin; Bowden Super Sport brakes; Shallow Highgate handlebar (steel).

This frame was built in November 1937. The frame was acquired with dulled chrome and apparently original transfers and paint. Typical for the period is the fully chromed head stock. The dt (fairground) transfer appears to be original, recognizable by the fade from red to gold (1940s dt transfers had a hard line from red to gold).

The current owner has preserved as much as possible of the original paint and transfers, covering over some of the dulled chrome with silver paint as a protective measure, but retaining much of the original black enamel and tranfers.

Components are: Chater Lea head clip, which also clamps the stem (no mounting bolt!); 3-arm Williams crank and Boa pedals; Conaloy Asp 26-inch steel rims; Airlite hubs, fixed gear; Brooks saddle; aluminum seat pin; Resilion cantilever brake (rear only). The bike is as near as possible to the original catalog specification.

Best compliments to the owner, who has done a fine job of conserving (not restoring) the bike in near-original condition.

This Brilliant Sprinter was built in September 1937 and first sold on 13 Oct 1937 (for GBP 5, 10s, 3d) to Frank Pentney, a dealer in Doncaster. It was bought from Pentney in 1937 by Francis Thomas Bullock, who used it in competition (as pictured above), before using it for commuting. It was acquired from the original owner's son in 2006 and subsequently renovated.

Note the steep headtube angle compared to the seat tube (top foto).

When it changed hands in 2006, it had a coat of thick blue paint on it. It was repainted by Cycleart in California in classic black and white enamel. It has been restored with the following period-correct (or appropriate modern) components: Chater Lea headset, hubs, pedals, and crankset; inch-pitch chain and sprocket; Lauterwasser handlebars; Swan-neck handlebar stem; GB Hiduminium front brake; modern rims and Brooks swallow saddle.

1937 Anglo-Continental

This frame was made in November of 1937. It features a 4-speed Super Champion, Bowden Super Sport brakes, Mansfield North Road saddle, Constrictor sprints rims on Airlite hubs, Vittoria Cyclo Cross tires, Bailey handlebars with custom stem, and Brampton pedals. Transfers were duplicated from a period photograph. The color scheme is jade green enamel, with hand-painted pin striping.

1937 Competition

This 22.5 inch Competition was made in February 1937 and sold for GBP 6, 16s, 6d. It was stored in an attic for 50 years from 1960 and is now back on the road in excellent trim. Note the modified Chater Lea/Brilliant lugs with points along the top and down tubes. Components include GB bar, stem, brake levers; Campag hubs, Nuovo Record mech; Weinmann brakes; Brooks Competition saddle; Chater Lea 3-arm crankset; Shimano pedals.

This is a 21 1/2 inch frame with vibrant stays. "H" on the head tube, "DI" on the seat tube (presumably the first owner's initials).

The components include: Chater Lea chainset, headset bearing, and pedals; dual cogs, single speed, fixed & free (reverse the rear wheel to change gears); Reynolds chrome stem & Bailey alloy bars; Gloria brake levers with GB calipers; Dunlop 26 inch s/s rims on Chater Lea lo-flange hubs; Wrights undersprung Swallow saddle on Reynolds alloy seatpin.

1938 tandem

This 1938 Brilliant D/G tandem mea6104/trio30.jpg[/img][/url]sures 22 1⁄2 inches by 22 inches and has a fluted seat tube. The finish is green with orange bands, chrome ends & head lugs. Components include Hetchins Brilliant handlebar stem with alloy bars, Cyclo four-speed gears, Chater Lea in-line chainsets, Constrictor platform pedals, Resilion brakes, Dunlop 26" x 1 3/8" Lightweight stainless steel rims on Airlight large flange tandem hubs, Brooks saddles on alloy seat pins, white Bantells 'Beau Regard' mudguards. The restoration was over ten years in the making: the frame was restored by Hetchins in 1990; locating period-correct components required two years, and the component restoration and re-fitting was completed in 2003.

1938 Trio

This 21.5 in curly frame with fluted seat tube was sold to Mr G Greeves on 4 August 1939 for ฃ13.9s.10d. The frame was rescued many years ago from a chap who was going to throw it out. The frame and forks were in good condition no damage or rust; it had been badly painted blue and had no transfers or markings on it. The bike has been restored over the last 2 years using period components where possible. Chater-lea crankset and pedals; Airlite large flange hubs, 4-speed on one side, fixed wheel on the other side; 27 in. Weinmann rims; Reynolds stem; Tour de France bars; CLB competition brakes and levers. This is one of only three Trios known to have survived.
