Lady Luck Turns Her Back

Bad luck has a way of building on itself, and thus far in the 2010 Tour de France, Lance Armstrong has been plagued by more bad luck than he experienced in all of the Tours he won. After losing 11:44 today to stage winner Andy Schleck and nearly that much to Alberto Contador, Cadel Evans, teammate Levi Leipheimer, and the rest of the yellow jersey contenders, it’s safe to say that Lance is not in the running to win the Tour anymore. All indications are that his fitness is very good, but the Tour de France is decided by much more than power numbers and power-to-weight ratios. You have to stay out of trouble and avoid mishaps, not only because of their individual danger, but because they tend to multiply.
Why is it that once a rider begins to have problems with punctures and crashes, that those problems often seem to linger or get worse? Part of the reason is that these problems cause a slight change in a rider’s mindset. When everything is going great, you’re strong, and you have all your skin, you feel like you can do no wrong. And as a result, you don’t give the risks associated with cycling any thought. You just ride and focus on the competition, not the minutia.
But once you’ve been on the ground or lost ground due to an untimely puncture, you start to see the risks you never normally consider. Almost any cyclist has had the same experience. You fall on a descent or in a criterium, and for a little while after that you’re more hesitant in similar situations. A corner you would have blown through without thinking last week now warrants a bit more consideration. But elite athletes are at their best when they’re able to clear their heads and just act. Overthinking the situation can lead to hesitation where there was no hesitation before, and that can sometimes lead a rider right into another crash.
Unfortunately for Lance, his run of bad luck culminated in a high-speed crash in a roundabout. He clipped his pedal and went down pretty hard. He got back up and onto a spare bike, but the timing of the crash was pretty awful. The peloton was speeding toward the start of the first major climb of the Tour, the Col de la Ramaz, so the chase back into the peloton was very difficult. The team helped Lance back into the pack, but Team Sky and Saxo Bank were on the front setting a very hard pace. Having dug deep to make it back to the peloton, the pace set by Sky and Saxo Bank pushed Lance over his limit and he lost contact.
Although Lance limited his losses on the Ramaz to about a minute, it was clear to him by the summit of a small climb in Les Gets that the pace in the contenders’ group was so high that he wouldn’t be able to catch back up. It’s just the way racing goes, and the same scenario could just have easily have happened in any of the Tours from 1999-2005. In those years, Lance benefitted from the combination of great fitness, great teammates, and good luck that bred continued good luck. This year the fitness and teammates are there, but he’s been about as unlucky as possible in a week’s worth of racing. But it’s important to remember that all riders have their share of good and bad luck in the Tour, and in the end the strongest rider wins, in part because he has the strength to avoid or recover from accidents and bad patches.
Up the road, the race for the yellow jersey was phenomenal. Team Astana set a huge pace on the front, led by Daniel Navarro with Contador right on his wheel. This group whittled its way down to about 14 riders by the time they reached the 3-kilometers-to-go banner, and Andy Schleck attacked out of the group in the final kilometer to take a great stage win. The most interesting part of the final kilometer, though, was that Contador was not able to match the acceleration of Andy Schleck. Contador relies heavily on his explosive accelerations to establish race-winning gaps in the mountains, and if he’s missing even a little bit of that explosiveness, he’ll be vulnerable to Schleck and Cadel Evans – both of whom are already ahead of him in the overall classification.
Thankfully, tomorrow is a rest day for the Tour de France, a chance to take a deep breath, put the first week of the race to rest, and focus on the days to come. It wasn’t a good week for Lance Armstrong, but hopefully his luck will turn around after the rest day. His chances of leading the race are all but gone, but Radioshack’s Levi Leipheimer is still in contention and there’s a lot of racing left to be done.
