Lance Armstrong will come out of retirement next year to compete in five road races with the Astana team, according to sources familiar with the developing situation.

Armstrong, who turns 37 this month, will compete in the Amgen Tour of California, Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphiné Libéré and the Tour de France — and will race for neither salary nor bonuses, the sources, who asked to remain anonymous, told VeloNews.

Armstrong's manager, Mark Higgins, did not respond to questions. And an Astana spokesman denied the report to The Associated Press.

"He is no part of our team," Astana team press officer Philippe Maertens told the AP in an e-mail. "Team Astana has no plans with him."

However, sources close to the story have told VeloNews that an exclusive article on the matter will be published in an upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, expected later this month. Vanity Fair editors did not respond to requests for comment.

Rumors of Armstrong's return swirled at last week’s Eurobike trade show in Germany and this week’s Tour of Missouri.

The rumor speculates that Armstrong will reunite with former team manager Johan Bruyneel at Team Astana — a viable option given Armstrong’s long-lasting relationships not only with the Belgian director but also Trek, Astana’s bike sponsor.

According to sources, the Texan will post all of his internally tested blood work online, in an attempt to establish complete transparency and prove that he is a clean athlete.

The rumor, which has been rampant for nearly a month, gained legs when former Discovery Channel team director Dirk Demol signed with Astana for 2009.

“I am excited to be reunited with Johan Bruyneel," Demol said. "What Johan has been able to do this year with Team Astana is quite special and admirable and I look forward to being a part of his program once again. It will be a new team with some familiar faces, but I know the winning philosophy and structure have remained the same.”

Other rumors are that Armstrong will continue to pursue mountain bike racing, and may try his hand at cyclocross as well.

Should Armstrong return with Astana, it would bolster a squad that arguably boasts the sport’s best stage-racing team.

In Missouri, Columbia rider George Hincapie, a close friend of Armstrong’s and the only man to ride on all seven of the Texan’s Tour winning teams, simply smiled when asked what he knew about the rumor, saying, “I don’t know anything.”

Armstrong re-enrolled himself into the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency’s out-of-competition testing pool prior to August’s Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race, where he finished second to Dave Wiens, said USA Cycling chief operating officer Sean Petty.

USADA rules state that any athlete who wishes to come out of retirement must enroll in the USADA out-of-competition testing program for at least six months in advance of regaining eligible status.

A return to racing would no doubt bring large crowds to American races, and could perhaps save the Tour de Georgia, which is struggling to land a title sponsor.

Petty said that should Armstrong wish to return to racing, “it would be one of the most exciting things to happen to American racing since he won his seventh Tour. Depending on his plan, if that is what he wanted to do, it would be tremendously exciting and would generate a tremendous amount of attention on the sport, and on what he’s doing. People would be very interested to see how he would do in a comeback.”

The last big-name rider to return from retirement was Italian Mario Cipollini, who signed with Rock Racing and competed at this year’s Amgen Tour of California after three years away from the sport. Cipollini failed to win a stage, but took third in a field sprint and said, “This finish means as much to me as any victory.”

Following the race Cipollini had a contractual dispute with Rock team owner Michael Ball and left the team.

Lance Armstrong won seven consecutive Tours from 1999-2005

Cycling legend Lance Armstrong is coming out of retirement to try to win an eighth Tour de France in 2009.

The American, who will be 37 on 18 September, recovered from cancer and claimed victory in the Tour a record seven times before retiring in 2005.

He said: "I'm happy to announce that after talking with my children, family and closest friends, I have decided to return to professional cycling.

"It is in order to raise awareness of the global cancer burden."

He added on his website on Tuesday: "This year alone, nearly eight million people will die of cancer worldwide. It's now time to address cancer on a global level."

Armstrong famously overcame an aggressive form of testicular cancer before embarking on his remarkable run of Tour de France victories.

Since his retirement in 2005, he has run respectable times in the New York and Boston marathons but much of his energy has been spent running the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a charity dedicated to combating cancer.

Armstrong had to return to the United States Anti-Doping Agency's (USADA) testing programme to compete in last month's Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race in Colorado.

He finished a creditable second in the tough event, to show he remains in good shape but the Texan is unlikely to settle for that at next year's Tour.

Armstrong will announce details of his team and pre-Tour racing schedule on 24 September at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City.

"I think it's great," said Armstrong's former team-mate George Hincapie.

"Without Lance, half the teams in the Tour probably wouldn't be around. He's done more than anyone for the sport especially in America and around the world."

Armstrong gave more detail of his return in an interview with American magazine Vanity Fair's website VF.com.

He appears to have been inspired by some of the older competitors at the 2008 Olympics, as well as what he believes was a slow pace of this year's Tour de France.

"Look at the Olympics," said Armstrong, who gave the interview to the website over three days in late August.

"You have a swimmer like Dara Torres, who claimed silver. Even in the 50m freestyle, a 41-year-old mother proved you can do it.

"Constantina Tomescu-Dita won the marathon and she was 38.

"Older athletes are performing very well. Ask serious sports physiologists and they'll tell you age is a wives' tale.

"I'm not going to lie. My back gets tired quicker than it used to and I get out of bed a little slower than I used to.

"But when I'm on the bike I feel just as good as I did before."

Nevertheless, Armstrong will have to buck a clear historical trend if he is to win a remarkable eighth Tour title, with only the 36-year-old Firmin Lambot - back in 1922 - winning the Tour beyond the age of 34.

During his career, many other riders were caught doping but Armstrong has never tested positive and has always maintained he was a clean rider, using hundreds of passed drug tests during his career as proof.

In 2006, an independent investigation by the International Cycling Union cleared Armstrong of any doping in his first Tour victory.

"There's this perception in cycling that this generation is now the cleanest generation we've had in decades, if not forever," said Armstrong.

"And the generation that I raced with was the dirty generation.

"I'll be totally honest with you. The year that I won the Tour, many of the guys that finished second through to 10th are gone. Out. Caught. Positive tests. Suspended. Whatever.

"And so I can understand why people look at that and go, 'well, they were caught - and you weren't?'

"So there is a nice element here where I can come with really a completely comprehensive program and there will be no way to cheat."

Armstrong has also hit the headlines and gossip columns for his private life since divorcing his wife Kristin, the mother of his three children, with high-profile relationships with singer Sheryl Crow, fashion designer Tory Burch and actress Kate Hudson.

After more than three years away from professional cycling, Lance Armstrong — the cancer survivor and seven-time Tour de France winner — announced Tuesday that he would emerge from retirement and climb back onto his bike.

Armstrong, who will turn 37 next week, spoke briefly about his decision in a videotaped statement posted on his foundation's Web site.

"Hey everybody, I know there's been a lot of reports in the media today about a possible return to racing," he said, wearing a white T-shirt and leaning toward what seemed to be a handheld camera. "Just want to let you know that after long talks with my kids, the rest of my family, a close group of friends, I have decided to return to professional cycling in 2009."

Armstrong provided few details, but he said he was making the comeback to begin an international cancer strategy. He did not return telephone messages, but in an e-mail statement he said his return would "raise awareness of the global cancer burden."

Armstrong, who retired from racing after winning the 2005 Tour de France, said he would discuss his plans during an appearance Sept. 24 at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York.News of Armstrong's return made its way through cycling circles in minutes. Steve Johnson, the chief executive of USA Cycling, said Armstrong's comeback would be a boon for the sport.

"Lance did so much to put the sport on the radar screen and, to me, I think heroes and role models are big in sports development," Johnson said. "I think a lot of people will tune in, just out of curiosity alone."

Bob Stapleton, the owner of the Columbia cycling team, also welcomed Armstrong's announcement.

"His ability to focus the world on other issues is a powerful tool," Stapleton said from a race in Missouri. "I hope this is part of a bigger story than just winning another Tour."

Stapleton cautioned that Armstrong's return would not necessarily be well received by everyone involved in cycling. Although Armstrong's career was filled with amazing achievements, it was not without its dark clouds. As a rider, he was dogged by suspicions about doping.

"He can be polarizing," Stapleton said. "There may be a different view in Europe about this than in the United States. It's a provocative issue."

Still, Stapleton said he had no doubts about Armstrong's ability to return as a competitive rider.

"It's quite a different dynamic; he's going to take the sport by its nose," Stapleton said. "He's dealing the cards right now."

Armstrong may not be the oldest rider in next year's Tour de France — if he competes in the race — but he will be beyond the typical age for an elite cyclist. An eighth victory would make him the oldest winner of the Tour. Firmin Lambot, a Belgian, won the 1922 event at age 36, according to the Tour's official history.

But first, Armstrong must find a team. Even the most talented cyclist cannot win on his own. Teammates provide shelter from the wind, chase down opponents and free the sport's stars from mundane, energy-sapping tasks like picking up water bottles from a team car.

The speculation has focused on the Astana team because of Armstrong's close connections to the team. Johan Bruyneel, whose holding company owns the team, was selected by Armstrong to direct the United States Postal Service team when Armstrong made his return to racing in 1999 after his cancer treatment. As a team director, Bruyneel was part of all of Armstrong's Tour de France wins.

Astana, though, is not guaranteed a berth in next year's Tour. The team was excluded from this year's race by the organizers because of doubts about the team's willingness to root out doping.

Philippe Maertens, a spokesman for Astana, said the team was unaware of Armstrong's announcement. He added that Bruyneel had been trying to reach Armstrong since Monday.

"I don't know him very well, but this is what you expect from someone like this," Maertens said.

แลนซ์ อาร์มสตรอง สุดยอดนักปั่นเจ้าของแชมป์ตูร์ เดอ ฟรองซ์ 7 สมัย ออกมายืนยันว่าตนเองจะกลับมาลงแข่งขันจักรยานอีกครั้งในปี 2009 พร้อมกับตั้งเป้าว่าจะคว้าแชมป์จักรยานทางไกล ตูร์ เดอ ฟรองซ์ ให้ได้เป็นสมัยที่ 8 อีกด้วย

ทั้งนี้ อาร์มสตรอง เผยว่าต้องการกลับมาขี่จักรยานเพื่อสนับสนุนโครงการเกี่ยวกับโรคมะเร็ง รวมทั้งยังต้องการพิสูจน์ให้เห็นว่าไม่ได้โด๊ปยา อย่างไรก็ตาม ยอดนักปั่นจากเทกซัส ยอมรับว่ายังมีงานต้องทำอีกมาก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งต้องหาทีมสังกัด หลังจากที่ทีมอัสตานา ออกมาปฏิเสธเมื่อวันก่อนว่าไม่มีแผนการจะดึงตัวอาร์ม สตรองเข้ามาร่วมทีม

ด้าน คริสเตียน พรูดอมม์ ผู้อำนวยการจัดการแข่งขันจักรยานทางไกลตูร์ เดอ ฟรองซ์ เปิดเผยว่ายินดีที่จะให้อาร์มสตรอง กลับมาแข่งขันศึกจักรยานรายการนี้ อย่างไรก็ตาม อาร์มสตรองจะต้องทำตามกฎการตรวจสารกระตุ้นปัจจุบันนี้ ซึ่งมีความเข้มข้นมากกว่าสมัยก่อน.
