Never Get Dropped
5 ways to keep up with a pack that's faster than you.
By Joe Linds
We all lose contact with the group sometimes. As you try to catch back on, it feels as if staying with the pack is a matter of lungs and legs, but it's mostly about brains. Stay relaxed and play it smart, and you'll be able to stick with riders who are stronger than you, which means better training, more experience and a shorter learning curve to leading the fast group yourself. Here are five instances in which riders get dropped, and how to stay close with the pack.

In Pacelines

Typically, you get spun from a paceline right after you pull. So pull smart; don't do a He-Man or She-Ra turn that leaves you blown at the end. Instead, begin a metronomic "four hard strokes, two easy" mantra, which will help you focus and help save your legs. Also, pull strategically: Finish a pull over the top of a hill, not in the middle or at the bottom. That way, you control the speed up the rise, and it's easier to stay in contact on a descent.

On Hills

If you can't climb as fast as the others, don't waste energy trying. Instead, start the climb with the leaders and hold a pace you can maintain, slowly drifting back through the group. Stay disciplined. If you time it well, you'll be at or near the back of the group by the time you reach the summit, but not off the back.

During Attacks

If you have good endurance and so-so power, but can't follow the blistering pace of breakaways, lift the pace high enough to discourage attacks in the first place. Control is only partly physical--if you're tractoring along, other riders may be too intimidated to try a flyer.

From Big, Fast Packs

Changes in pack speed are magnified toward the back of a large group, so even if you're fit you can get flicked off the back during a modest surge up front. The best spot is in the front third of the group, far enough up that you're less subject to these speed changes, but not so far forward that you're not getting a good draft. It takes effort to stay there--a big pack is a constant, boiling mess of bodies, most of which are trying to be in the same space you are. But it's easier than being the tail of the whip.

In a Too-Fast Pace

Simple drafting is easy: Stay within a foot of the back wheel in front of you, and watch three or so riders ahead. Don't stare at the wheel, because you won't be able to react to sudden events if you don't see them in time. If you're just fighting to stay on, make sure you're really in the draft. Crosswinds can be fickle, and sometimes the best spot isn't directly behind another rider. To find the sweet spot, move around in the draft zone from left to right, and listen. When the wind noise gets quieter, you'll know you are where you want to be.

How To Get Back On If You Are Dropped
TUCK AND GO A single rider descends faster than a pack, because the solo rider has better line choices. Ride smart, but ride aggressively, using the whole lane to keep your speed high while the group has to brake to account for its size.

TEAM UP If you're not the only one dropped, form a group and team-time-trial it back up to the pack. Keep pulls short, less than 30 seconds, and at max power.

REROUTE THE ROUTE If the group is approaching a light or stop sign, hammer. They'll have to slow down, so you're immediately gaining ground on them. Or, if you know the ride route well, take a short cut to head 'em off at the pass.

Finish 100 Fast
Want to crush your next century? Here's your plan.
By Selene Yeager
'); // end hide from browsers -->
Almost any cyclist with enough miles under his or her tires can finish a century. But how about a sub-six or even a sub-five-hour 100? The key is riding fewer miles--faster.

To pull a 100-mile PR, you need to pedal with speed and force without accumulating more lactate than your muscles can continuously use, says Michelle Grainger, elite USA Cycling coach at AthleticExcellence.net. "That means training to raise your lactate threshold," says Grainger, "so you'll draw on your aerobic system for more of your ride, and be able to ride faster with less fatigue." Accomplishing this takes intense intervals, and the discipline to go very easy on recovery days to let all the work sink in.

This advanced 10-week plan, designed by Grainger, assumes you have a solid base and ride about eight hours a week. If it's too hard for your current level, reduce volume and intensity by 10 to 20 percent. Bicycling.com/fastcentury has all 10 weeks. Here are the first four to get you going.

The Efforts Lactate Threshold (LT): Race-pace intervals. An 8 effort on a scale of 1 to 10, or your average heart rate or power output during the last 20 minutes of a 30-minute time trial. Muscular Endurance (ME): Force-based drills to boost muscle endurance Speed: Max effort at the highest cadence you can manage Resistance training (RT): Off-bike, total-body weight training to maintain muscle mass
